How to Grow Your Curly Hair Longer, Faster

1 min read

Every head of hair grows at about the same rate: ½ inch to 1 inch per month. For curly girls, that means your curls are growing — even if it sometimes feels like they aren’t. The key to seeing and keeping that length? Preventing breakage.

The Math of Growth

Let’s break it down:

  • On the lower end, if your hair grows ½ inch a month, in 16 weeks (4 months) you’ll have about 2 inches of new growth.

  • If you’re trimming regularly, every 12–16 weeks, I take off just ½ inch or less to prevent split ends from traveling upward and breaking your curls shorter than we want.

That means in 4 months, you gain at least 1.5 inches of length. Do this for a year and you’ll see a minimum of 4.5 inches of new length!

Why Regular Trims Matter for Curls

Split ends usually start forming between 12–16 weeks. Once they start, they don’t just stay at the ends — they travel upward, leaving curls frizzy, uneven, and shorter than you’d like.

By trimming before they spread, we:

  • Maintain healthy ends

  • Keep definition in the curl pattern

  • Protect your overall length so your growth shows

How to Support Growth Between Trims

  • Hydrate: Healthy, moisturized curls break less often.

  • Protect: Use silk bonnets, scarves, and gentle styling to reduce friction.

  • Nourish: Balanced wash days and treatments keep curls strong and resilient.

Lori’s Tip:

You can’t “speed up” how fast your hair grows, but you can maximize how much length you keep. Healthy curls = longer curls.
