What is my Curl Type?

Curl types are grouped into four main categories (Type 1 through Type 4), with subcategories A, B, and C that describe how loose or tight your pattern is. While no two heads of curls are the same, these categories help give a general idea of how your hair might behave — and what it may need.
Type 1: Straight Hair
No visible wave or curl pattern
Naturally the oiliest and smoothest
Has the least body and volume
Type 2: Wavy Hair
These waves form an S-shape and typically fall somewhere between straight and curly.
2A – Straight when wet, develops a soft wave as it dries. Often fine and easy to weigh down with product.
2B – Wavy when wet and dry. More prone to frizz, needs a bit more structure and hydration.
2C – The most textured of the wavy types. Thick, high in moisture and elasticity, and often has natural shine.
Type 3: Curly Hair
These curls tend to spring into defined loops or spirals.
3A – Loose, defined curls with natural shine. Often more easily stretched or weighed down.
3B – Tighter, denser curls with a more elliptical shape. Often more frizz-prone and less naturally moisturized.
3C – Densely packed, corkscrew-shaped curls. Usually coarse with lots of volume and shrinkage.
Type 4: Coily & Kinky Hair
These textures form tight coils or zig-zag patterns, and are the most delicate and prone to dryness.
4A – Defined coils that are visible wet and dry. Often soft with noticeable shrinkage.
4B – Tighter coils or zig-zag strands with a fluffy or sponge-like texture.
Type 4 hair has the least natural moisture, elasticity, shine, and strength — which makes gentle care and hydration essential.
Why Curl Type Alone Isn’t Enough
Knowing your curl type is helpful — but it’s not the full picture. Other factors like:
Hair porosity
Elasticity
Density
Your hair’s internal structure
…all play a role in how your curls behave.
But when we get down to what you can be doing at home to make sure your curls are healthy, happy and hydrated, the answer is always to facilitate water. I'll show you exactly how to do that at your first appointment with me. Learn about my Learn Appointments at www.loripeppinhair.com/newguest
