Product Mistakes people make with Curly Hair

#1 Using oils and creams excessively. Your curls thrive on hydration (aka water!). Oil repels water. They often sit on top of the hair and create a barrier for the water we need. Oils and creams weigh the hair down and do nothing to help water get into and remain in the hair.

#2 Applying their styling products when the hair is too dry. This is probably the most common mistake I see. You want your hair section (yes, see #3!) to be wet enough that it is clumped together with water dripping off the bottom of the clump (not pouring).

#3 Not sectioning the hair when applying styling products. Everyone who does hair professionally takes sections for everything they do. People who do their hair at home almost never do and this simple thing is one of the biggest things that affects the results you get. I take a mohawk section at the top of the head, section each side behind each ear, and split the remaining hair (the back) into top and bottom. This leaves three sections down the middle of your head in a mohawk, and two on each side.

#4 Choosing products that don’t seal in water. Your styling products serve a purpose - to lock water into your curls. Water gets rid of frizz, water gives us curl definition and hydration. Everything else is just unnecessary.

#5 Buying shampoo with a PH level higher than 5.5 - we want our shampoo to have a PH between 4.5 and 5.5- anything higher and you might experience scalp issues including but not limited to dry scalp flakes, itchy and red scalp, bumps and other irritation.

#6 Buying products just because they say ‘curls’ on the bottle. There are a LOT of products that say things like ‘curl cream for curly hair’ and when you check the ingredients, there are all kinds of bad things in them.

To learn exactly how to choose the products that your hair needs, join me in the salon for a Curl Discovery Session. I’ll tell you which ingredients to look for and avoid, how to know exactly what kind of product you’re looking at even if the information isn’t on the bottle, and I’ll set you up with tools to make it easy.

If you just want to know what to buy, you can’t go wrong with Innersense. Click the link below and note that I do get affiliate commission from purchases using the link.

If you don’t know which ones you need, start out with Hydrating Hairbath and Conditioner and I Create Volume to use as a gel. Hope to see you in the salon soon!
