Wash Day Best Practices

Wash days set the tone for your curls. Done right, they can give you defined, hydrated, frizz-free curls that last all week. Done wrong, they can leave your hair flat, dry, or frizzy. Here’s my step-by-step guide to a perfect wash day:
1. Start with a pH-Balanced Shampoo
Use a shampoo that’s gentle and pH-balanced to cleanse without stripping moisture. Focus on the scalp and let the lather rinse through your curls.
2. Condition for Slip and Hydration
Apply conditioner generously to detangle and get water into the hair. Squish to condish — scrunch water into the hair to maximize hydration — then rinse with cool water to close the cuticle and lock in moisture.
3. Apply Leave-In and Styling Products
After towel blotting or gently removing excess water:
Apply leave-in conditioner first (Sweet Spirit is perfect).
Follow with a lotion or cream for added moisture.
Seal with your chosen product (gel, custard, or mousse) to define curls and hold shape.
4. Diffuse Until Completely Dry
Gently diffuse your curls until bone dry. This ensures curls are set and frizz is minimized.
5. Protect Overnight
Sleep with a bonnet or silk scarf to prevent friction and moisture loss.
6. Refresh Curls in the Morning
After removing your bonnet, let your hair bounce back for about 15 minutes. Then, refresh one curl clump at a time for perfect definition without disrupting the rest of your curls.
